Salina, Kan. – The Kansas Association of Nursing Students (KANS) held their 60^th annual convention at the Marriot Hotel in Wichita, Kansas, held in conjunction with the Kansas State Nurses Association’s (KSNA) Centennial Celebration.

A two-person exhibition featuring artists, Jamie Bates Slone and Gina Adams, will fill the gallery space beginning Monday, November 5. 

Slone received her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Kansas in Spring 2012 and her BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Ceramics in 2008 at the University of Central Missouri. Her recent work deals with the fragility of the human spirit in the midst of illness and loss in relation to her family's history with cancer. 

For the past four years, Kansas Wesleyan University athletics have campaigned for breast cancer awareness. A small project brought to fruition by a KWU soccer player has turned into a weeklong event for the University, culminating this year in a $9,031 donation to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center in Salina.

Facilitated by Juli Miles, assistant volleyball coach, and Johnna Klohoker, assistant soccer coach, the school was able to contribute its largest donation to the Center in the history of their Pink Week activities. 

During the month of November, Kansas Wesleyan University will participate in the National Novel Writing Month program, an annual internet-based project. The challenge is to write 50,000 words (or approximately 175 pages) of a new novel between November 1 and November 30. The project has grown from an event of just under two dozen participants in 1999 to over 200,000 people who participated last year for a total of over 2.8 billion words.

The Kansas Wesleyan Theatre Department will perform “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later” the last weekend of October. The story takes place ten years after Matthew Shepard, an openly gay college student, was murdered because of his sexual identity. Members of the Tectonic Theater Project returned to Laramie to conduct follow-up interviews with residents featured in the play. Those interviews were turned into a companion piece, entitled The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. This show contains material considered to be mature in content.

Nick Taylor, a life-long quadriplegic and three-time Olympic gold medalist in wheelchair tennis doubles (including the 2012 Paralympics in London) will speak as part of the Wesleyan Challenge at Muir Gymnasium on Wednesday, October 24.

Salina, Kan. – Master Gardener and Biologist Paul Willis will present a free program for the public at Kansas Wesleyan University on Thursday, October 18. Willis’ presentation will feature the topic of Kansas’ native wildflowers and butterflies.

The athletic department at Kansas Wesleyan University is spearheading another campaign to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Last year, the volleyball and soccer teams presented a check for $4700 to Tammy Walker Cancer Center and this year the goal is $6,000 for the same organization.

Salina, Kan. – Jack Lennon, a senior at Kansas Wesleyan University from Salina, is currently among the leaders an international competition, Project Green Challenge. “Project Green Challenge 2012 is a global call to action for high school and college students to transition from conventional to conscious living.

The Salina Symphony Guild will host a charitable run/walk Saturday morning, Oct. 20. Participants will "Move It with the Maestro" as far as they can during the time it takes to play a recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 (approx. 47 minutes).
